Here’s yet another spawn of my addiction of domain names. I managed to purchase the domain LinkBag.com some time ago at auction and quickly devised a simple web service that would easily facilitate the sharing and storing of related links. This is one of those projects I’ve been quietly toying with on the side. I’m finding that having a few extra personal side projects helps keep me from burning out on one larger project.

So, “what is this thing,” you might ask. At it’s core, LinkBag.com is a place to group and share your links. It isn’t meant to be a competitor of social bookmarking sites like delicious. In fact, it’s kind of a different take on social bookmarking. The point is to help organize your links and encourage sharing. However, instead of tagging everything to death, you simply place links inside general categories that you create (called linkbags).
Say you are shopping for a new MP3 player and want to keep track of the deals you are finding. Create a LinkBag and add all the links to your bag. Then, if you want to get a friends opinion of what you’ve found, simply give them the short URL of your LinkBag (instead of sending them each and every link). That’s only one basic example of how it could be used. Usually, I find that web apps tend to change and become what it’s users want it to be. So, what do you want LinkBag to be?
The site is brand spanking new. I decided not to slap the “beta” tag on it. Instead, consider the site in a constant state of improvement. For example, there are no RSS/ATOM feeds available yet. But, that’s next on my list to add. I, myself, will use the site about 3 times as much as I already am once I add feeds for every LinkBag and LinkBag user. I’m also planning on a simple WordPress widget to display your LinkBag links. Some other ideas I’ve had are the ability to create private LinkBags and allow other users to add links to your bag. But, that’s a bit down the road. I’m very much open to suggestions. Please, give it a look at let me know what you think. It’s probably not going to be for everybody, but I have a feeling it’ll be exactly what some people have been looking for.
In other news, thanks to a new sponsor of wpzipper.com, I’ll be stepping up my efforts and finishing up the new “better-than-ever” version of the site this weekend. I highly suggest you check back sometime Monday afternoon, because it’s gonna be sweet.
